Indian MPs visit University of Chicago


New Delhi: Aiming to fast track solutions for India’s diverse energy challenges, a delegation of Members of Parliament (MPs) from India are visiting the University of Chicago. Hosted by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC- India) and the Climate Parliament, the visit is aimed at facilitating knowledge exchange between the Indian legislators, researchers from the University of Chicago and policymakers and opinion leaders in Chicago and Washington, DC. The delegation of MPs consisting of Riti Pathak, Rakesh Singh and Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal of Bharatiya Janata Party; Kalikesh N. Singh Deo and Dr. Prabhas Kumar Singh of Biju Janata Dal; Vincent Pala of Indian National Congress, Vandana Chavan of Nationalist Congress Party and Vivek Gupta of All India Trinamool Congress will be in the United States from 28th October to 3rd November, 2017. During this week long visit, the legislators will meet experts to dive into best practices related to energy, environment and climate policy challenges. The parliamentarians will also attend roundtables on regulatory and policy solutions to environmental issues and meet with researchers who have studied India’ energy challenge. Additionally, the legislators will travel to Washington, DC to meet specialists at the White House and the Environmental Protection Agency. Detailing more about the visit, MP Dr Sanjay Jaiswal said, “Exchange programs like these are great moments of learning. I am glad that our delegation represents different political parties across diverse geographies and I hope that we come back with some exciting, innovative and replicable best practices so as to contribute towards India’s suitable development goals.” As a part of an MoU, EPIC- India and Climate Parliament have been working towards building the capacity of Indian MPs for confronting various energy and environmental challenges.
